Understanding Road Tax Exemption & SORN for your Rover P6

Rover P6s were not built in chassis number order, so there is no definitive cut-off by chassis number for where tax exemption starts in the UK. Legislation states that tax exemption on classic cars begins automatically on April 1st in the year after a car has passed its 40th birthday.

Establishing Build Dates:

While the DVLA system sets an "unknown build date" to the end of the registration year, establishing your actual build date may trigger tax exemption earlier. The only way to prove this is to have your chassis number looked up in production records held at The Motor Heritage Centre, Gaydon, to secure a formal Dating Certificate. If you find or acquire a vehicle not currently listed on DVLA records, you will need to apply using the DVLA's V765 Scheme, which requires an inspection by an Authorised Signatory. Statutory Off-Road Notifications (SORN):

Under current UK legislation, you must declare "SORN" if your vehicle is not actively taxed on the public highway, whether it qualifies as tax-exempt or not. You are permitted to have your car insured but not taxed as long as it is stored strictly off-road on dedicated personal parking.
